Tone and mood are literary elements integrated in literature.
When to Use Tone
Tone is the way that an author wants their work to feel. It can be described precisely as the attitude or character of a place or piece of writing.
Tone Examples:
- The sun is shining brightly in the meadow, let’s go out and play!
- The haunted mansion was dark with an eerie appearance.
- I’d rather stay here and wait than go into that dark room.
When to Use Mood
Mood is the way that someone feels about the content that they are reading. It can be defined specifically as a temporary state of mind or feeling.
Mood Examples:
- There was plenty of food, and the music was playing. Everybody was having a good time.
- When I read the section about The Haunted Mansion, it made me feel scared and anxious.
- The man kicked and threw the poor cat out of his house.
